I realized this recently after spending five weeks in Canada. When we returned to the beach for the first time, I expected to feel nothing but excitement. And while there was laughter and fun, there was also this subtle tension—an old habit of waiting for the next challenge.

Why Joy Feels Uncomfortable
For many of us, joy isn’t the default. Our nervous systems are conditioned to handle challenges, solve problems, and stay in survival mode. So when life does feel good, it can feel unfamiliar or even uncomfortable.

  • We’re waiting for the other shoe to drop.
  • We dismiss joy, thinking we haven’t earned it.
  • We breeze past the good moments, focusing on what’s next.

The Science Behind Feeling Good
Here’s the thing: feeling good is a skill. Neural pathways strengthen with repetition. The more we practice feeling at ease, the more our nervous system learns to return there naturally.

EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) is a powerful tool that helps your body and mind feel safe in positive states. Tapping calms the nervous system, rewires old patterns, and helps you hold onto joy without waiting for it to slip away.

How to Build Your Capacity for Joy:

  1. Acknowledge the Discomfort: Notice when feeling good feels weird. That’s not failure—that’s an opportunity to expand.
  2. Tap Through Resistance: Use EFT to release the tension and allow ease to settle in.
  3. Create Space for Joy: Regularly schedule time to rest, play, and celebrate—even if it feels uncomfortable at first.
  4. Anchor in the Good: After moments of joy, take a deep breath and really feel it. Let your body soak it in.
